Google’s gmail app is a java midlet application you can install on your mobile phone to allow you to access your gmail account. The Gmail java application has just been upgraded to version 1.5.

The Gmail midlet uses the IMAP protocol to access your gmail account. This simply means that when you access your email using the gmail application things will be in sync when you access them again from the web or in another mobile phone with the gmail application.
