Things have been really changing in the mobile industry. Key activities like Google’s announcement of its open mobile platform called Android have contributed in bringing us closer to the convergence of the mobile phone and the personal computer.

Because of the exciting events happening in the mobile space today, I’ve decided to introduce a new topic on javamidlet.com and a tagline — “The mobile phone is the computer”. Every now and then I read about articles that, in my opinion, will bring us one step closer to realizing the tagline — “The mobile phone is the computer.”

A recent announcement of Verizon about opening it’s network in a manner similar to the way you connect your computer to a wireless LAN is GREAT news!

As the technology of mobile phone gets more powerful and the mobile network opening up in a grand way, we will be seeing a lot of innovations and growth. New levels of experience in social networking, online gaming, electronic commerce and banking are key areas.

One area I would really like to watch is the way user identification will change. Having a unique mobile number has potentials in many areas like authentication, marketing, identification. This will also introduce potential problems on privacy. Already we are experience spam on our mobile phones and I would really like to see how such problems get solved.

“The mobile phone is the computer” is one more step closer.
