Award Winner Starship Troopers - Roughnecks

The Starship Troopers Roughnecks Java mobile game won the Best Mobile Action Game in the People’s Choice category of the recently concluded 2007 German Developer Awards. I recently got a copy of the mobile game so I started playing it on my mobile phone.

The Starship Troopers Roughnecks Java mobile game, published by Ojom Mobile Games, is based on the novel Starship Troopers by Robert Heinlein which was later made into a movie and an animated TV series.

The first thing that caught my attention about the mobile game was the graphics. Elocom, the developers of the mobile game, did a very good job at the graphics. The scenes are visually well created.

Learning the Java mobile game is very easy although it took me some time getting used to the key sequence required to fire the weapons during the game. But once you get the hang of it, it makes it easy to play the game without having to move your fingers away from a “joystick” / d-pad equipped mobile phone.The mobile game has three main human characters. Rasczak, John Rico’s commander, gives out the objectives of the different missions you need to accomplish. Carmen Ibanez is the pilot that provides transport after accomplishing the missions and in occasions air support during missions.

The missions of the game start out simple. As you go deeper into the missions you will encounter different types of insects as the enemies. You start out with “5 lives” as John Rico the soldier tasked to accomplish the mission.

During the missions you will be able to pick up other types of weapons, reload your weapons or get medical kits to heal your wounds. Once you have accomplished the mission you can go to a pre-designated extraction zone where Carmen Ibanez will transport you out of the area.

I liked the game because of it’s great graphics and simplicity. I can enjoy playing the game during the times that I want to relax. An idea hit me though, I wonder if it could be made into a multiplayer mobile game.

If you like shoot ‘em up type of mobile games, then this game is definitely for you. If you’re also a Starship Trooper fan then you should buy this Java mobile game.
