@Nick -- The S60 and S40 emulators are both rather hefty and slow programs. This is because they emulate a lot more than the standard WTK emulator. They emulate the entire Symbian operating system and thus there are a lot of overheads.

Basically it needs those 20 seconds to start up the operating system, then it sends your application across. So no matter how large (or small) your application is it will take around 20 seconds to boot. If your starting out with J2ME stick with the WTK emulator that comes with the Netbeans Mobility pack, as you gain nothing but a time sink with the s60 emulator -- unless you're testing fully featured apps.

In addition, you'll notice that your applications will run faster on an S60 device.

Many thanks for publishing this extremely useful "how to".

Is the emulator always so slow? I have a 3.4 GByte processor running Windows XP SP2 with 2 GBytes of memory but it takes 20 seconds or so between pressing F6 and my "Hello World" application starting. Is there anything I can do to speed this up?
