Java-enabled phone = decrease mobile phone sales
I was reading an article about how the worldwide mobile phone market grew to 15 percent during the second quarter of this year but not so good compared to 60 percent earler in the year when I got stunned…
I can understand that a decrease in mobile phone sales can result from a slow down in the world economy because of the recent increases in gasoline prices for instance but … The article goes on saying that the decrease in the mobile phone sales was due to two factors:
… the slowing economy around the world and the development of more sophisticated “enhanced phones” running Java or Qualcomm’s BREW rather than true smartphone operating systems like Symbian, Windows Mobile, or Apple’s OS X, according to Gartner. …
I was going to try to read the Gartner article but as it turned out it’s not for free (cost USD 1,495.00). Too bad ‘coz I would want to know the reason why:
A Java-enabled mobile phone would lead to a decrease in mobile phone sales? Weird don’t you think?
Does it mean that if J2ME developers continue developing J2ME applications it would lead to the consequent demise of new mobile phone sales?
Another thing, does it mean that when Android (a Java-enabled mobile platform) comes out, there will be lesser mobile phone sales?
Can someone enlighten me please.
